My Nomad Journey – Baton Rouge, Louisiana & Tallahassee, Florida

[Last weekend in October, 2025] From San Antonio, it’s back on the road. I have a few stops planned, but mostly to break up the drive and allow time for work. When I’m driving and staying in motels, I have to factor in things like drive time, check-in times and check-out times when it comes to work schedules. If I’m planning to check out of a motel on a particular day, but then there are meetings and calls all day, then I need a stable place to work. So I’ll often stay an extra night in order to secure the room as an office. When I have these periods of multiple drive days, I really need to be organized with my work calendar.

Here’s what I did:

I drove from San Antonio, through Houston, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This was going to be a quick stopover, but I arrived early enough in the evening to allow for some time to get out of the motel. After checking in, I located a location of my gym that was also close to some food options. I got in a workout and then walked a few doors down to grab some things to eat and some staples at the grocery store. After, I drove to an ice cream shop and got a scoop or two. (This is one of my indulgences – does it count as an indulgence when I do it many nights?) After that, it was back to my motel to settle in and hit the road the next day.

The next morning I drove many hours along the gulf coast (Gulf of MEXICO – not the incorrect way the sell-out tech companies are naming it right now). Arriving in Tallahassee, Florida, I was surprised by how hilly and forested it was. This is the Capitol city of Florida. It is located near the northern border of the state, which is geographically more like southern Alabama or southern Georgia. There are forests, evergreen trees and rolling hills. It is very different from the rest of the state. I enjoyed the terrain and the temperatures were starting to get cooler by this time. After checking into my motel, I had the whole evening to drive into town and explore a little. I parked near the Capitol and took some photos, then walked around just checking out the town. It’s a cute place and there was a lot of life going on in the central district. I also found a vegetarian restaurant to grab my dinner. What an interesting place!!! This vegetarian restaurant was actually vegetarian bar food, in a punk/goth music club! This place had all the vibes of a dive biker bar – dark room, live band, sticky floors, patio full of chain-smokers – but it was a totally vegan menu. I grabbed a burger and sat outside for some peace and quiet, but that wasn’t possible. I ate quick and continued my walk.

The next day in Tallahassee was a full work day, so I worked from the motel and then headed out in the evening to grab food at the Whole Foods. I didn’t really explore this night because it was dark, but I did drive through some really cute neighborhoods around downtown.

The next day, I checked out and began the long drive down to Miami.

Here’s what I learned:

I don’t have much to report here, other than the fact that many places are never what I assume they will be. I thought of Tallahassee as a small town without much going on. It turned out to be a very busy small city with an active population and lots of natural terrain that I considered beautiful. It also appears that the town leans more liberal politically, despite being in a strongly right-leaning state. I was surprised by how that dynamic likely works out.

Here’s what’s next:

From here it is a few weeks in South Florida and then on to Atlanta. I will be visiting friends, attending a work meeting, getting work done and petsitting.

As always, please interact with this post. I love getting your questions, your thoughts, and your comments. I’ll reply when I’m able.

Please enjoy yourselves in this week ahead and look for another update from me about the adventures of the journey. Be well my friends!
