My Nomad Journey – Kerrville and San Antonio, Texas

I’m sorry for the delay (again) in posting! It’s been a month and I still have a LOT of catching you up to do! As of this writing, I need to finish out October 2025 travels, then get you into November and December 2025. This post continues that and will eventually get me caught up to where I’m currently at in January!
Here’s what I did:
In case I’ve been bad about dates, this post takes place the last week of October, 2025. From El Paso, my next stop was San Antonio to visit some friends and get some work done. Based on people’s schedules and such, I wasn’t expected in San Antonio until Tuesday. I decided to layer in some exploration and booked a motel in Kerrville, Texas. Kerrville is northwest of San Antonio, on the interstate. This town is in a more hilly, geographically diverse landscape. I’ve been there before, but never stayed there and explored the town. So I took 2 nights to allow for some exploration and also a solid place to work. Kerrville has some historic elements and is on the Guadalupe River. If you’re not familiar with this river, it is where they had massive floods in July 2025, that took many, many lives. You can google about this tragedy. It was a horrible failure in preparedness, communication and politics. In addition to walking around the town and eating at a few interesting places, I was able to visit the river. You can still see the damage today – months later. Many large trees are bent over. There is debris in the higher branches and some areas are still closed. It is always humbling to visit these places that have experienced disaster.

On Tuesday, I headed into San Antonio to stay with my friends Cate & Tammy. This part of the visit had me staying in the center of the city, in an older neighborhood, not far from where I lived back during my years in San Antonio. We had a great time catching up and they were gracious to provide me with a place to stay, relax and work. I greatly enjoyed the one-on-two time with them. I think it has been years since we spent that much time together! In addition to work, I was able to get out and connect with a few other friends and former co-workers. I wish I had the time and schedule flexibility to connect with more folks! Shout out to Dorothy and Cary for making time for dinner! P.S. While in San Antonio, I didn’t take many pictures. I lived there before and any time out with people was more about catching up than sight-seeing. 😁

Later in the week, I moved locations to my friend David’s house in the outer suburbs. It was fun to see his new home and community, as well as his great dogs – Kaya and Dogg. These spirited hounds were a lot of energy and fun! Uncle Paul likes to spoil the canine and feline nephews and nieces. It was nice to spend some one-on-one time with David. We are much older now. When I lived in San Antonio years ago, we lived in the same neighborhood and often did happy hour and dinner together. Or runs (I ran much more back then.). We had fun catching up and I was grateful to have a place to get more work done. As before, I was able to get out a couple of times to connect with some other folks. I wish we had more time! Shout out to Kim and Ben for making time for dinner! And also shout out to Mara for making time for lunch! I wish Robert had been able to join us.

Saturday morning it was time to hit the road and start heading for Florida. At this point, I had a few days to get to Miami. I planned a few stopovers to break up the drive and also to allow for some work time from a motel. I made sure to grab some breakfast tacos on the way out of town, though!

Here’s what I learned:
I think I’ll take a moment here to acknowledge myself for learning how to be mobile. I think I’ve always been pretty good at this, but typically it has been difficult when it came to my “stuff” and organizing my things. I’m the kinda person who like to have everything in it’s “designated” place, neatly organized and tidily put away. While it’s true of all of my travels, this week was a good example of how I’m able to easily live “from my bags” and be able to pack/load/unload/unpack multiple times within a week. It’s a testament to my systems, the way I organize my bags and also to letting go of old expectations, while allowing for new ways of thinking about how I live in the world.
Here’s what’s next:
I’m on my way to Miami (after my stopovers). There, I’ll stay with my friend Jennifer and also spend some time with my friends Daniel and Sophia. I will be in South Florida until the weekend before Thanksgiving, then transition to Atlanta to spend the rest of the year with Heidi.
My plan for the end of the year is to settle in for the holidays (I don’t really observe or celebrate them), allow time for wrapping up the work year, and generally catch up with myself.
I hope you have positive plans for the next two months for yourself, as well.
As always, please interact with this post. I love getting your questions, your thoughts, and your comments. I’ll reply when I’m able.
Please enjoy yourselves in this week ahead and look for another update from me about the adventures of the journey. Be well my friends!
